ZhangLiang Malatang: Reviews & Ratings
I recently visited ZHANGLIANG MALATANG in Chinatown, and I have to say it was a great dining experience overall. The restaurant was clean, tidy, and well maintained you can tell they take good care of the place. The staff were friendly, helpful, and very patient when explaining how everything works, especially for first-time visitors like me. Their cheerful attitude and quick service made the visit even more enjoyable. The food itself was very good. I loved the concept where you get to pick exactly what you want to eat you simply grab a big bowl, choose from a wide variety of meats, vegetables, noodles, tofu, seafood, and more, then hand it to the counter for cooking. The pricing is based on weight, at £3.48 per 100 grams, which is quite reasonable considering the quality and freshness of the ingredients. They are also offering a 20% discount until the 31st of November, which makes it even better value for money. Most of the dishes I tried were flavorful and cooked perfectly in their signature spicy and aromatic malatang broth. The broth had just the right balance of heat and depth, and everything soaked up the flavors beautifully. However, the only disappointment for me was the squid it was a bit tasteless and slightly smelly, lacking the freshness and texture I expected. Apart from that, everything else was excellent. Overall, ZHANGLIANG MALATANG is a must-try spot in Chinatown for anyone who loves customizable, delicious, and authentic Sichuan-style hot pot dishes.
Absolutely love Zhangliang Malatang! All ingredients are super fresh and tasty. This is authentic, original Chinese malatang flavor. The staff are very friendly and helpful. Highly recommend!
Friends who like mala mix should definitely go for the Sichuan pepper version - refreshingly numbing with a hint of garlic and just a little spice, absolutely perfect For ingredients, I really loved the garlic chicken - so fragrant with garlic! The squid was fresh and flavorful~ I loved both the bamboo shoot slices and bamboo shoot hearts - crispy, flavorful, and tasty~ Quail eggs- the finishing touch!!! So good Frozen tofu and greens - no need to explain, they add great texture, really nice Then add instant noodles as the staple - so satisfying

Located in the heart of London’s Chinatown at Nassau House, 112A Shaftesbury Ave, ZhangLiang Malatang offers an authentic gateway to Sichuan street food culture. This vibrant restaurant specializes in malatang, a customizable hot pot experience where diners select fresh ingredients—meats, vegetables, noodles, tofu, and seafood—to be cooked in richly flavored broths. The concept alone invites an engaging and interactive meal, making each visit unique.
ZhangLiang’s signature broths deserve special mention. The Chilli Soup Base delivers the classic mala balance—numbing Sichuan pepper mingling with bold chili heat, creating layers of complexity that excite the palate without overwhelming it. Equally impressive is their Classical Mala Beef Bone Soup, which is rich and hearty yet clean, showcasing deep umami tones that perfectly complement an array of ingredients. For guests looking for variety, options such as Massaman Curry, Tom Yum, and the delicate 菌菇鲜汤 mushroom broth add depth and international flair, ensuring that there is something to satisfy every taste preference.
The freshness and quality of the ingredients stand out immediately. From the crisp bamboo shoots and tender tofu skin to the perfectly seasoned garlic chicken and fresh seafood, each element absorbs the broth’s flavors beautifully. The self-serve sauce station offers an additional layer of customization, allowing diners to craft dipping sauces that mirror the authentic Sichuan taste or suit personal flavor profiles. This interactive aspect enhances the meal and showcases the thoughtful design of ZhangLiang’s offering.
Beyond the food, the atmosphere is clean and casual, supported by attentive, friendly staff well-versed in guiding first-timers through the ordering process. Pricing is transparent and fair—based on weight at £3.48 per 100 grams—with frequent promotions like a 20% discount currently enhancing the value proposition.
Personal highlights include the perfectly balanced spiciness of the medium beef broth and the fresh, vibrant tomato soup base that offers a refreshing counterpoint to the heavier mala flavors. The inclusion of ingredients such as quail eggs and frozen tofu adds textural contrast that elevates the overall experience. While most ingredients excel in freshness and taste, occasional misses like the squid—reported to lack expected freshness—are rare.
In essence, ZhangLiang Malatang captures the spirit of authentic Sichuan street food with a modern, accessible approach. It’s a must-visit for those seeking a warm, aromatic, and deeply satisfying meal in London’s bustling Chinatown. Whether you crave a rich bone broth, a fiery mala sensation, or a light mushroom soup, the restaurant’s diverse and fresh selections coupled with its customizable style guarantee a memorable dining adventure.
